The New Faces of Design in Queensland
The Design Institute of Australia (DIA) Queensland Branch has a couple of new faces at its helm looking to shake things up a little.

After four very successful years at the helm of the DIA, Robert Geddes recently stepped down to make way for new leadership.

In a first for the DIA in Queensland, the State’s leading design association has two co-presidents in the form of Dr Dianne Smith and Natalie Wright.

Both very experienced Interior Design professionals, the co-presidents will work together to further the aims of the DIA in supporting and growing the design industry in Queensland.

Dr Dianne Smith is senior lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology and co-ordinator of the post-graduate and undergraduate Interior Design programs. Dr Smith’s academic background also includes teaching colour and design at the Queensland College of Art and a range of design-related disciplines at the Queensland University of Technology.
She is an invited speaker in the areas of design and colour and has a strong interest in design in relation to community service.
Natalie Wright is an Interior Designer currently working for Fairweather Proberts Architects in Brisbane. She has over 17 years experience in the design and delivery of a range of hotel, leisure, retail, residential and commercial interior design projects, both within Australia and internationally.

Wright won numerous awards for Residential Interior Design while Associate Director/Interior Design Manager at Mirvac Design from 2000 – 2005. A Queensland University of Technology (QUT) graduate, she also retains strong ties in the education sector, lecturing and tutoring in Interior Design at both QUT and Southbank Institute of Technology.

Both co-presidents have served on the DIA Queensland Council for a number of years and will now also serve on the DIA National Council providing a voice for Queensland design.

New Name for Prestigious Design Awards
The Design Institute of Australia (DIA) Queensland Branch today announced an exciting new look and name for the annual Queensland Design Awards.

DIA Queensland Co-presidents Dianne Smith and Natalie Wright today unveiled the new name: qdos (Queensland Design on Show), and invited submissions for the prestigious awards.

“We’re very excited about the launch of qdos (pronounced ‘kudos’), its associated events and networking opportunities for the Queensland design industry,” Ms Smith said.

“qdos provides a unique opportunity for Queensland’s designers and design companies to be recognised for their outstanding work by their peers and the general public.

“The last Queensland Design Awards achieved a record number of entries and included an international judge for the first time, qdos will continue this success and build on it.”

“qdos is about promoting the value of design in everyday life and recognising Queensland designers as some of the best in the world,” said Ms Wright.

“The awards program includes all facets of the design industry in the three major categories of Interior Design, Three Dimensional Design and Visual Communication, with more than 20 sub categories. (for a full list of categories see over page)

“Entries are now open for the awards, including the Smart State Designer of the Year award, and we encourage all Queensland design companies and designers to get involved in this program.”

Along with the launch of the new name, the DIA also announced an interesting competition to promote the new qdos branding.

More than 1000 Queensland design industry professionals have received a three-dimensional qdos symbol that they are being asked to photograph with their favourite example of Queensland design.

Entries will be displayed on the qdos website and winning photographs will be showcased in the qdos awards program in June 2008. This unique competition is aimed at promoting the qdos brand and encouraging involvement from design professionals.

Entries for qdos 2008 are now open, entries close Friday 22 February, 2008 and the qdos awards presentation will be held on Friday June 13, 2008.

Queensland Design Awards to consolidate 2007 and 2008 programs.
he Design Institute of Australia (Queensland Branch) has announced it will consolidate its 2007 and 2008 Queensland Design Awards program. Entries will open in November 2007 and the Awards will be presented in June 2008.

Rob Geddes, President of the Design Institute of Australia DIA in Queensland said the hiatus would provide the opportunity to evaluate and restructure the extraordinarily successful program.

In five years the Queensland Design Awards has achieved an extraordinary level of success, growth and profile.

“To build on this achievement and to lead the Awards into the future, the DIA (Queensland) plans a number of developments, beginning with the consolidation of the 2007 and 2008 program,’ Mr Geddes said.

The Queensland Design Awards will return to being an annual program in 2009.

Highlights of last year’s program included the publication of the third and fourth book in the Design Excellence in Queensland series, the introduction of the Queensland Government and Pol Oxygen Designer of the Year Award, and the successful introduction of fashion design into the program.

“The Awards attracted unprecedented support from key players within the design sector, business and government.

“A record number of entries were received, and we had an international judge for the first time”, he said.

The awards presentation dinner at the Queensland Art Gallery was a sell-out, and the exhibition at the Gallery was visited by more than 11,000 people.

“With this combination of awards, publication and exhibition and some new initiatives, Queensland designers will continue to have plenty of opportunities for recognition of their work,” Geddes said.
